ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Commitment to Environment / Sustainability

Snackbrands Australia is passionate about protecting the quality of the environment by reducing waste, encouraging recycling, and by working to improve production line efficiencies to reduce electricity and water consumption.

All of our iconic chips use Australian grown potatoes and corn to limit the carbon footprint created by transporting farm fresh produce to our factories, and encourage all distributors and consumers to recycle product packaging or dispose of it thoughtfully.

Snackbrands Australia is committed to minimising the impact our business has on the environment by:

  • Reusing nominally 20% of our water in Production at the Smithfield Manufacturing site
  • Recycling more than 80% of our waste into compost and stock feed
  • Using recycled materials in distribution packaging material
  • Ensuring ongoing management of packaging waste
  • Innovating with sustainable product packaging design
  • Undertaking energy usage audits and using this information to invest in lower energy consumption options (for example upgrading to LED lighting in office and factory facilities)
  • Implementing the APCO ( Australian Packaging  Covenant Organization ) PERT/ARL packaging standards

Australasian Recycling Label SBA - Redcycle update

Snackbrands Australia (SBA) is a proud member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organization (APCO). Our membership allows SBA to use the Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP) to determine the recyclability of our soft plastics, and in selection of the appropriate Australasian Recycling Label (ARL).

As of November 2022, the REDcycle programme paused their soft plastic collection and recycle operations until further notice. SBA products with soft plastics packaging, which are labelled with recycling guidance cannot be returned to stores at present due to the unavailability of suitable recycling facilities. Consumers will unfortunately need to dispose of soft plastics packaging to general waste bins until notified otherwise. Alternatively, you can check with your local council to see if they have any collection programmes for recyclable soft plastics. We are disappointed by this situation and sincerely apologise to our customers. We continue to remain committed to the reduction of soft plastics and finding a solution.

Updates on Redcycle can be found on the company’s website redcycle.net.au/what-to-redcycle/ and official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/REDcyclebyREDGroup

Palm Oil Statement

Snackbrands understands community concerns regarding the ecological and environmental impacts of palm oil production in developing countries.

  • In September 2012 we became members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (known as "RSPO") an international not for profit organisation established to advance the production, procurement, finance and use of sustainable palm oil products.
  •  In 2013 we made a public commitment to use 100% RSPO certified sustainable palm oil in all the products we manufacture by 2015.
  • We are happy to announce that we have now fulfilled this commitment.
  • In October 2014 we commenced supply of 100% RSPO certified sustainable palm oil in our procurement via the “mass balance” methodology.
  • In February 2015 our Snackbrands owned Australian manufacturing sites underwent a RSPO certification audit for Segregated Palm oil and have successfully gained certification; Upgrading our manufacturing sites certification status from Mass Balance to Segregated.
  • We have commenced receiving and using Segregated oil Palm oil at both our manufacturing sites.
  • Now and in the future, we will only use RSPO Certified Sustainable Palm Oil for our iconic Australian products.
  • We are independently audited yearly to maintain the integrity of our RSPO Segregated Certification.
  • We remain confident that our action plan meets the needs of the environment and the community in which we operate.
