Commitment to Environment / Sustainability

Snack Brands Australia is passionate about protecting the quality of the environment by reducing waste, encouraging recycling, and by working to improve production line efficiencies to reduce electricity and water consumption.

All of our iconic chips use Australian grown potatoes and corn to limit the carbon footprint created by transporting farm fresh produce to our factories, and encourage all distributors and consumers to recycle product packaging or dispose of it thoughtfully.

Snack Brands Australia is committed to minimising the impact our business has on the environment by:

  • Reusing nominally 20% of our water in Production at the Smithfield Manufacturing site
  • Recycling more than 80% of our waste into compost and stock feed
  • Using recycled materials in distribution packaging material
  • Ensuring ongoing management of packaging waste
  • Innovating with sustainable product packaging design
  • Undertaking energy usage audits and using this information to invest in lower energy consumption options (for example upgrading to LED lighting in office and factory facilities)
  • Partnering with the REDcycle group to recover and recycle chip plastic packaging
  • Implementing the APCO ( Australian Packaging  Covenant Organization ) PERT/ARL packaging standards

The REDcycle program

Snack Brands is proud to partner with the REDcycle program, an initiative to recover and recycle plastic bags and soft plastic, in line with our commitment to continue reducing packaging waste.
The REDcycle program is a partnership between manufacturers, retailers and consumers.
Consumers simply drop their chip packets and other soft plastics
into the specially marked bins at Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.
These are, in turn, collected by the REDcycle group and sent to their partner
Replas who produce a great range of products using
the recovered recycled materials, such as outdoor furniture, bollards,
decking and dog agility equipment.

For the period July to December 2018, the REDcycle program recycled 4742 kgs of Snack Brands material – the equivalent of 1.185 million chip bags!
Snack Brands Australia are currently updating our packaging to include the Recycling and REDcycle logos, in line with other changes to our artwork. As at end Jan 2020, we have completed 40% of our packs, with all packs to be finalised by the end of 2021.

Palm Oil Statement

Snack Brands understands community concerns regarding the ecological and environmental impacts of palm oil production in developing countries.

  • In September 2012 we became members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (known as "RSPO") an international not for profit organisation established to advance the production, procurement, finance and use of sustainable palm oil products.
  •  In 2013 we made a public commitment to use 100% RSPO certified sustainable palm oil in all the products we manufacture by 2015.
  • We are happy to announce that we have now fulfilled this commitment.
  • In October 2014 we commenced supply of 100% RSPO certified sustainable palm oil in our procurement via the “mass balance” methodology.
  • In February 2015 our Snack Brands owned Australian manufacturing sites underwent a RSPO certification audit for Segregated Palm oil and have successfully gained certification; Upgrading our manufacturing sites certification status from Mass Balance to Segregated.
  • We have commenced receiving and using Segregated oil Palm oil at both our manufacturing sites.
  • Now and in the future, we will only use RSPO Certified Sustainable Palm Oil for our iconic Australian products.
  • We are independently audited yearly to maintain the integrity of our RSPO Segregated Certification.
  • We remain confident that our action plan meets the needs of the environment and the community in which we operate.
